About Debrah

Debrah Williams TherapistWhen I graduated from George Fox University with my Masters in counseling I was excited that I had fulfilled a dream. Yet, as I look back I realize that a much deeper form of education had taken root years before that created a deep compassion and drive to help others. Twenty years ago I was one of those who had literally collapsed mentally and physically, when despair took over my life to the point I was nonfunctional for months. As I climbed out of the despairing mindset I began to realize the degree to which I had allowed my self worth to be built on external things and controlled by others. My recovery created a deep appreciation for the ability of people to be aware of the inner processes of their humanity. I have come to believe that it is this lack of awareness and the inability to listen to our inner world that sets us up for despair, anxiety, and depression.
Often, as with my life, these skills are not learned during childhood due to family limitations. And, there are those who quit using these skills and are unaware they have done so, due to the degree of life challenges and difficulties. I used to ask God how Paul in the Bible could say he had learned to be content in all things when he was misunderstood and beaten. Paul didn’t seem to deny his experience, yet he was at peace with the life he had been given. Then, I took a new look at Paul’s life from the point of his profound experience on the Demascus Road. He was changed! As humans our brains are wired to make sense out of life and our sufferings. Paul did not try to make sense out of it, but instead allowed himself to be touched in the deepest places of fear and the loss of control. It is here that God allowed him to understand at a deep level HIS abiding presence in all things. Therefore, all experiences in life become an opportunity for more growth and a deeper connectedness with yourself, others, and God. Finding the path to this type of recovery is not usually done alone. We are met to be relational and I have found that since we are wounded in relationships, it is through relationships that we are transformed. I invite you into a journey of growth and the process of transformation.
